October 6, 2019

It's now almost a year since Dave arrived back in the UK from his long drive home from Almaty and Wilson parked up on our driveway in Scotland.

Angela has continued to recover well after her surgery in Uzbekistan and the doctors here are happy with the treatment Angela received and for that we are thankful.

There was no time to rest once Dave arrived back. First thing was to get Wilson imported back into the UK and onto UK Regis...

Having spent 10 days in the UK making sure Angela had everything she needed and attending the forest wedding of Angela’s eldest son Ryan and Alex it was time for me to head back to Almaty and collect Wilson to start the long drive home.

The flight home involved a 22-hour stop over at Ataturk Airport, Istanbul. Not the nicest 22 hours but I did manage to catch some sleep and although the wait seemed like forever I was soon in Al...

Our plans for enjoying a few days relaxing in the Russian Altai region started off well.

Leaving the border we headed into Russia. Once again the views were stunning and we were in awe of the mountains, forests and rivers. We arrived at a wild camp spot to find a small stream. A family of Russians were already camped up and the came over to say hello. Once again conversation was difficult and our lack of language skills was ver...

Once again we are jumping forwards of where we should be on our blog.

The Russian Altai and Pamir Highway blog will follow but in the last week circumstances have changed affecting the rest of our trip.

Leaving Dushanbe in Tajikistan last Sunday (2nd September) morning we had no idea of the turmoil that was about to hit us.

By lunchtime Sunday completely out of the blue with no prior warning Angela started experiencing painful st...

The Oasis Guest House and Café in Ulaanbaatar is a Mecca for Overlanders and great place to speak with like-minded travellers and get updates on routes and road conditions. There were big trucks, Unimogs, Land Rovers, Land Cruisers all number of different configurations.

We enjoyed a few beers with many of them whilst we were staying. Some interesting routes and similar stories of breakdowns, getting stuck and meeting the local...

After arriving in Mongolia we spent a few days relaxing and meeting other Overlanders whilst we waited for Gerry and Lee of Celtic Rover.

Once we met up we had 4 days to make the 700 odd miles to Khatgal.

We planned to take the northern route which has a reputation for being difficult and sometimes impassable but also with stunning scenery.

All of the above turned out to be true.

Near Achit Nuur we were unable to cross the river...

Camping in Cappadocia, Turkey - April 2017

Our setup for The Big Trip 2017 worked pretty well. It was not perfect but then no one set up ever is. Having Lara the trailer allowed us to set up base camps from where we could explore and see more of the area without the need to pack up every day. It allowed us to pack more luxury items whilst leaving the rear of Wilson relatively clear of equipment.

So setting up base camps is pret...

We had a week in Santa Pola with the Gusto Overland and Lizzybus teams and this was just the tonic we needed to move on from the robbery near Barcelona. The constant enthusiasm and encouragement from all of them certainly put us in a determined mood to get what needed done and make the trip to Morocco.

First of all we needed to get Emergency Passports. Dave had spoken to the Embassy in Madrid and both consulates in Barcelo...

February 6, 2018

Since coming back both of us have struggled to settle, more so for Dave who struggles to get a full nights sleep.

This is something that we were unaware would be an issue however since speaking to a number of long trip overlanders we have found this to actually be quite common.

We have taken the opportunity to visit family whilst here and loved meeting up with all our kids and grandkids, spending time with all of the...

December 5, 2017

Here you can see a track of our route to date December 2017.

Currently we are visiting family for Christmas in Scotland and will be taking the opportunity to catch up with the blogs and photo galleries but also do a little touring.

We are excited about some upgrades we are having done to Wilson to make our life on the road easier and these will be a first for a Defender 90 so keep checking back and we will share everything as so...

November 30, 2017

We arrived in Helsinki just after 4pm. Leaving the Ferry our route was straight through the busy roads in the city towards our campsite just on the out skirts of Helsinki called Rastila Campsite. A decent sized campsite with decent facilities but maybe not the nicest of areas to walk around. The metro was close by just outside the campsite so if you wanted to visit Helsinki it was a good location however we arrived a bit too l...

Having spent so long in Croatia it was bittersweet to be moving on again. We had loved our time but we were itching to get moving and Dave was wanting to get to Nordkapp in the far north of Norway before the colder weather arrived and so it was we headed off.

Going through the border from Croatia to Slovenia was very easy just having to show passports and drive on and our first impression of Slovenia was very good. The houses a...

So we left Montenegro and headed to Croatia.

But first we had to drive around the remainder of the sea loch passing through Kotor and following the road as it runs all round the coast line with steep cliffs towering above. This loch really does have a feel of a Norwegian Fjord except warmer. We took our time stopping off to get more pictures and wishing we could have spent more time in Montenegro.

But Dave’s daughter Ellie is co...

Our time in Greece had come to an end and we needed to get moving so we could make Angela’s flight to the UK from Dubrovnik in Croatia and Dave’s daughter Ellie’s arrival in Dubrovnik for a holiday.

We packed up and firstly headed into town to find a bank. We were unsure how the border would be as we had no insurance and wanted to make sure we had enough to buy it at the crossing.

The actual drive to the border took about an hou...

July 6, 2017

Our final day in Turkey was spent with Dave checking over Wilson again to try and identify the source of the coolant leak. Whilst Angela got everything else packed away ready for the drive to the border.

Finally Dave thought he had identified the leak as a core plug in the engine block. Relief, its not so critical and we can continue to top up as required and monitor the temperatures. So with both of us but Dave in particular f...
